Tour Itinerary Terdrom Hot Spring Tour

Day 01: Arrival in Lhasa by Air or Train

Upon your arrival at Gongkar airport or Lhasa Train Station, our Tibetan guide and driver will warmly welcome you. You will be transferred to your hotel in Lhasa city. If you choose to fly, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the snowy Himalayan ranges during the short flight. Alternatively, if you opt for a train ride, you’ll traverse the high plateau and cross the mighty Thangu la ranges, offering picturesque sceneries along the route.

The distance from the airport to Lhasa is approximately 70km, which takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes by car. From the train station, it is only 25km and takes about half an hour. After checking in at the hotel, take the remainder of the day to acclimatize to the altitude and alleviate any jet lag. Rest and relax in Lhasa. Overnight stay in Lhasa.

Day 02: Escorted Tour of Lhasa

Today, we will explore the captivating attractions of Lhasa, including Jokhang Temple, bustling Bakhor Street, and Drepung Monastery. As you adjust to the high altitude, you may experience mild headaches, which is a common occurrence for travelers in this region. It is advisable to stay hydrated and engage in light activities during the initial days.

In the morning, our guide will meet you at the hotel, and we will begin with a relaxed visit to Jokhang Temple located in the heart of old Lhasa. This temple holds immense sacredness and has always been bustling with devoted local pilgrims since ancient times. Following the temple visit, you will have time to stroll along Bakhor Street, which serves as both a devotional circuit and a vibrant central market in Lhasa. While it was once a renowned local market, it has now transformed into a shopping hub for tourists. You will be amazed by the sight of local pilgrims prostrating in front of the temple, particularly during the winter months.

Next, we will visit Drepung Monastery, one of the largest monasteries globally, accommodating over 10,000 monks. Previously, it served as the residence of the Dalai Lama before the construction of Potala Palace. Despite past destruction, there are still numerous remarkable sights to behold. You will navigate through narrow and winding lanes, passing by monks’ residences that resemble a typical village.

For the remainder of the day, continue acclimatizing to the altitude and alleviating any jet lag. Take the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. Overnight stay in Lhasa.

Day 03: Escorted Tour of Lhasa

Today’s itinerary includes a visit to two prominent attractions in Lhasa: Potala Palace and Sera Monastery.

In the morning, we will explore the majestic Potala Palace, a revered landmark and a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. Originally constructed by the 33rd King, Songtsen Gangpo, in the 7th century, it was later rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century. Throughout history, the palace served as the residence for the Dalai Lama and the seat of the Tibetan government. Although climbing the long steps can be challenging, the experience is rewarding as you leave your footprints in this spiritually significant palace, known for its divine compassion. In recognition of its cultural and historical value, Potala Palace was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994.

We will conclude the day with a visit to Sera Monastery. Founded in the 15th century by Jamchen Choji Sakya Yeshi, a disciple of Tsongka Pa, this monastery is home to several monastic colleges that house hundreds of monks from different regions of Tibet. One of the monastery’s highlights is the famous Buddhist philosophical debates, which take place daily in the afternoon (excluding Sundays). These debates showcase the intellectual prowess and spiritual depth of the monks.

As the day progresses, continue to acclimate to the altitude and alleviate any jet lag. Take the opportunity to rest and rejuvenate. Overnight stay in Lhasa.

Day 04: Drive from Lhasa to Terdrom Nunnery Hot Spring via Ganden Monastery (180km, 3.5 hours)

Today, we embark on a scenic drive from Lhasa to Terdrom Nunnery, situated in the Drigung Valley. Along the way, we will have the opportunity to visit Ganden Monastery, enjoy views of rural Tibetan villages, and explore the retreats of Terdrom Nunnery and its hot spring.

Our main destination is Terdrom Nunnery, renowned for its retreat and meditation practices that date back to the 7th century. It holds historical significance as the site where Gurupadmasambava and his consort, Khadro Yeshi Tsogyal, once meditated. Even today, their caves can be visited. Additionally, the natural hot spring in the area is well-known for its healing properties, providing a perfect opportunity for relaxation and rejuvenation in the afternoon.

During our journey, we will also make a stop at the famous Ganden Monastery. Founded by Tsongkapa in the 15th century, it became a prominent center for Buddhist learning within the Gelugpa sect, one of the four main sects in Tibetan Buddhism. Perched atop Wango Hill (4500m), the monastery offers breathtaking views of the Khyichu Valley.

We will spend the night at a local guesthouse or hotel, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the surroundings.

Day 05: Return Drive to Lhasa via Drigung Til Monastery (170km, 3 hours)

Today, we will retrace our route back to Lhasa, making a stop at Drigung Til Monastery along the way.

As we bid farewell to the enchanting Drigung Valley, we will visit Drigung Monastery, perched on the slopes of a steep cliff with commanding views of the valley. This monastery holds a distinguished reputation for its mastery of meditation practices.

Drigung Monastery is well-known among Tibetans for its holy sky burial site. However, please note that access to the sky burial site is restricted for travelers. In the past, some tourists disregarded local rules by taking photographs at the site, resulting in a violation of local culture and traditions. It is essential to respect the local culture and refrain from requesting your guide to visit the site, as it puts them in a difficult situation.

In the afternoon, we will arrive back in Lhasa, allowing you some free time to explore the town and its surroundings. Overnight stay in Lhasa.
