Shangri La to Lhasa Overland’s Tour Details

The captivating Yunnan-Tibet overland tour commences in the fabled land of Shangri-La in Tibet. Embarking on the journey from Shangri-La to Tibet involves traversing the Mekong River and barren sandstone landscapes across the elevated terrain between the Mekong and Yangtze Rivers. Breathtaking vistas of the sacred Mt. Karwa Karpo can be witnessed from the Feilaisi viewpoint, while joining the Sichuan-Tibet southern highway at Markham allows for following the ancient tea horse road to reach the Tibetan plateau.

Shangri-La, situated in China’s Yunnan Province, serves as the starting point for this expedition. Tibet’s landscape is adorned with awe-inspiring sights such as picturesque lakes and snow-capped peaks nestled within the lush fertile valleys of eastern Tibet. The journey continues westward, leading to the sacred city of Lhasa. Exploring the world heritage sites and enigmatic temples within the city will leave travelers in a state of wonder and deep appreciation.

The eastern part of Tibet enjoys a mild climate, thanks to the influence of monsoon winds and precipitation originating from Southeast Asia. Consequently, this adventurous expedition is best undertaken from April to mid-June and then from September to November, as the monsoon season (lasting from the end of June to August) brings potential road damage. Rest assured, this is an unparalleled journey through Tibet that guarantees an unforgettable experience.
