You will be welcomed by our Tibetan guide and driver. They will accompany you to your hotel in Lhasa city. If you arrive at Gongkar airport, the hotel is approximately 70km away, and the journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. If you arrive at Lhasa Train Station, the hotel is only 25km away, and the journey takes approximately 30 minutes. After checking in at the hotel, take the opportunity to relax and acclimatize to the altitude, allowing your body to adjust and minimize any jet lag effects. Enjoy your overnight stay in Lhasa.
Day 2: Lhasa Escorted Tour
Attractions: Jokhang Temple, bustling Bakhor Street, and Drepung Monastery.
Today marks your first day on the high plateau, and it’s common for some travelers to experience a mild headache due to the altitude. To alleviate any discomfort, it is recommended to drink plenty of water and engage in light activities during the initial days. In the morning, our guide will meet you at the hotel and accompany you on a relaxed visit to Jokhang Temple, located in the heart of old Lhasa city. Jokhang Temple holds immense sacred significance throughout Tibet and is always filled with devoted local pilgrims. Afterward, you will have time to explore Bakhor Street, which is both a spiritual circuit and a vibrant central market in Lhasa. While it used to be a famous local market in the past, it has now transformed into a tourist shopping hub. You will be amazed by the sight of local pilgrims prostrating in front of the temple, especially during the winter months when their numbers increase. Drepung Monastery, one of the world’s largest monasteries, is home to over 10,000 monks. It once served as the residence of the Dalai Lama before the Potala Palace. Despite experiencing destruction at different times, there are still many fascinating elements to see. As you wander through the narrow and winding lanes amidst the monks’ quarters, it feels more like exploring a traditional village. Spend the remainder of the day acclimatizing and adjusting to the time difference. Enjoy your overnight stay in Lhasa.
Day 3: Lhasa Escorted Tour
Attractions: Potala Palace and Sera Monastery.
Today, our itinerary takes us to the remarkable Potala Palace in the morning. This iconic symbol of Tibet is an architectural marvel and was initially constructed by the 33rd King, Songtsen Gangpo, in the 7th century. Later, in the 17th century, it was rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama. The Potala Palace served as the residence for the Dalai Lama and his government. Although ascending the long steps can be a challenge, it is a truly worthwhile experience to set foot inside this spiritual palace, known as the manifestation of God’s compassion. In 1994, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
To conclude this amazing day, we will visit the Sera Monastery. Founded in the 15th century by Jamchen Choji Sakya Yeshi, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, this monastery comprises several monastic colleges where hundreds of monks from different regions of Tibet reside. The monastery is renowned for its daily Buddhist philosophical debates among the monks, except on Sundays, which are held in the afternoon.
Take the rest of the day to acclimatize and adjust to any lingering jet lag. Enjoy your overnight stay in Lhasa.
