DAY 02. LHASA ESCORTED TOUR.
Attractions; Jokhang temple, bustling Bakhor street and Drepung monastery.
Today marks your first day on the high plateau, and it’s common for some travelers to experience mild headaches due to the high altitude. To alleviate this, it is advisable to stay hydrated and engage in light activities during the initial days.
In the morning, our guide will meet you at the hotel, and you’ll embark on a leisurely visit to Jokhang Temple, located in the heart of the old Lhasa city. Jokhang Temple holds immense significance as one of Tibet’s holiest temples and remains bustling with devoted local pilgrims.
Following the temple visit, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Bakhor Street, a vibrant and crowded marketplace that holds both religious and commercial importance. While it used to be a renowned local market, it has transformed into a center for tourist shopping. Witness the awe-inspiring sight of local pilgrims prostrating themselves in front of the temple, particularly during the winter months.
Drepung Monastery, one of the world’s largest monasteries housing over 10,000 monks, will be your next destination. It served as the residence of the Dalai Lama prior to the construction of the Potala Palace. Although it has experienced some damage over time, there are still plenty of captivating sights to explore.
Take a stroll through the narrow, winding lanes that lead to the monks’ quarters, resembling a traditional village. Spend the remainder of the day acclimatizing to the altitude and recovering from any jet lag. Overnight stay in Lhasa.
DAY 03. LHASA ESCORTED TOUR.
Attractions; Potala palace and Sera monastery.
Today, we begin our morning by visiting the magnificent Potala Palace, an iconic symbol of Tibet and a remarkable example of Tibetan architecture. Originally constructed in the 7th century by the 33rd King, Songtsen Gangpo, it was later rebuilt in the 17th century by the 5th Dalai Lama. Throughout history, this grand palace served as the residence for the Dalai Lama and his government. While ascending the lengthy steps may pose a challenge, the experience is truly rewarding as you leave your footprints in this spiritual palace of compassion, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994.
The awe-inspiring day continues as we visit Sera Monastery. Founded in the 15th century by Jamchen Choji Sakya Yeshi, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, this monastery is comprised of several monastic colleges that house hundreds of monks from various regions of Tibet. One of the notable highlights here is the renowned Buddhist philosophical debates, which take place in the afternoon every day except Sunday. Witnessing these debates is a remarkable opportunity to immerse yourself in the profound teachings of Buddhism.
