Tour Itinerary of Lhasa Tour with Namtso Lake
DAY 01: ARRIVAL IN LHASA BY AIR OR TRAIN
Upon your arrival in Lhasa, either by air or train, you will be greeted by our Tibetan guide and driver at Gonggar Airport or Lhasa Train Station. They will accompany you to your hotel in Lhasa city. The distance from the airport to Lhasa is approximately 60km and takes less than an hour via the recently built highway. From the train station, it is only 25km and takes about half an hour. Once you have checked into the hotel, take the rest of the day to acclimatize and alleviate any jet lag. Overnight in Lhasa.
DAY 02: ESCORTED TOUR OF LHASA
Today, our guide will meet you at the hotel in the morning for an easy visit to the Jokhang Temple in the center of Old Lhasa city. The Jokhang Temple holds great sacred significance in Tibet and is always bustling with devout local pilgrims. Afterward, you will have time to explore the Bakhor street, a devotional circuit and bustling central market in Lhasa. While it used to be a famous local market, it has now transformed into a tourist gift shopping center. The day will conclude with a visit to the Sera Monastery, built in the fifteenth century by Jamchen Choji Sakya Yeshi, a disciple of Tsongka pa. Sera Monastery is home to several hundred monks from different parts of Tibet, and you will have the opportunity to witness their famous Buddhist philosophical debates in the afternoon, except on Sundays. Spend the rest of the day continuing to acclimatize and alleviate jet lag. Overnight in Lhasa.
DAY 03: ESCORTED TOUR OF LHASA
Today, we will visit the famous Potala Palace, the cardinal landmark of Tibet and a masterpiece of Tibetan architecture. Originally built by the 33rd King Songtsen Gangpo in the 7th century and later rebuilt by the 5th Dalai Lama in the 17th century, the Potala Palace served as the residence of the Dalai Lama and his government. Although climbing the long steps can be challenging, it is a worthwhile experience to leave your footprints in this spiritual palace of the God of Compassion, which has been listed as a World Heritage site since 1994. In the afternoon, we will visit the Drepung Monastery, which was once the world’s largest monastery, housing over 10,000 monks. Drepung Monastery served as the residence of the Dalai Lama prior to the Potala Palace. Despite various destructions over time, there are still many fascinating sights to explore as you walk through the narrow and twisted lanes amidst the monk’s apartments. Spend the rest of the day continuing to acclimatize and alleviate jet lag. Overnight in Lhasa.
DAY 04: DAY TRIP TO NAMTSO LAKE (4700m), 8.5hrs, 500km
Today, we will embark on a drive to the northwest of Lhasa via the Qinghai-Tibet highway, following the route of the Tibet railway to Damshong. We will then cross the Lagen la pass and continue driving west to Namtso Lake. The northwestern part of Tibet, known as Changthang (Northern plain), offers vast pastures for plateau nomads. From the ridge of the Lagen la pass (5190m), you will be treated to the first breathtaking view of the Namtso Lake vista. As we drive along the paved road cutting through the nomads’ grasslands, you will spot the black tents of nomad families during the summer season. The Tashi Do peninsula will be our final destination of the day, where you can explore the surroundings in the afternoon. Namtso Lake is one of Tibet’s three most sacred lakes, and Tibetans embark on a pilgrimage circumambulation around the lake during certain ritual times, which takes about a month or less to complete the entire circuit. It is the world’s highest saltwater lake and the second largest in China, spanning 70km in length and 30km in breadth (the largest saltwater lake in China is Kokorno Lake in Qinghai province). In the late afternoon, we will drive back to Lhasa, and en route, you will have the opportunity to visit a nomad family and gain insight into the lifestyle of plateau nomads while experiencing their yak wool tent from the inside. Overnight in Lhasa
